Ethan Smith (b. 2002) is a Composer and Game Designer from Michigan.
Ethan has written works for Orchestra, Chamber Ensembles, Hybrid Ensembles with classical musicians and jazz musicians, and electronic works including works for video games. He takes musical inspiration from a variety of video games made by companies like Nintendo, Square-Enix, Sega, Capcom, and many various indie game studios. Ethan also takes inspiration from modern classical composers such as Ravel, Debussy, Hindemith, etc. as well as jazz composers such as John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, Bill Evans, etc.
Ethan has worked on various game projects using a variety of game engines such as Unity, Godot, and Unreal, as well as other external tools such as FMOD, Reaper, Blender, and others. Ethan plays a variety of different video games made by both indie and large studios, and enjoys playing a broad genre of games including Action-Adventure, 2D/3D Platformer, RPG, Roguelike, Racing, and many others.
Ethan has collaborated with the Michigan State University Symphony Orchestra, as well as many Performers who are currently at or are alumnus of Michigan State University. In 2024, Ethan won the MSU composition studio's annual Honors Competition, and had his piece, "Vintage Fantasy", performed by the MSU Symphony Orchestra in March 2025.
Ethan has developed and self published his own game on platforms like Steam and Itch.io. He was the sole developer on a game titled "Randall the Grape Jelly Cube goes to Soda Valley for some reason", and he created code assets, 3d models, level designs, gameplay mechanics, shaders, sound effects, and music for the game in the span of 4 months.
Ethan holds two degrees from Michigan State University; A Bachelors in Composition and a Bachelors in Games and Interactive Media.
